After 38 wonderful years of teaching kindergarten and pre-k, I have recently retired. While teaching kindergarten, I created for my students a series of easy-to-decode phonics books called, the Half-Pint Readers. Now that I am retired, my new purpose is to create resources for beginning reading based upon my classroom experience and the best practices for early childhood education.
I have found the most effective way for teaching reading is through the Orton-Gillingham methodology. This method follows a systematic, sequential and cumulative approach and encourages the use of multi-sensory activities.
We know children learn best through play and discovery so it makes sense to use hands-on activities to teach new skills. I also received a certificate for Excellence in Education from our state representative. I also completed my post-graduate work in the master's program for Early Childhood Education at the University of Pittsburgh.
In addition, I received intensive teacher training from the Orton-Gillingham Institute for Multi-Sensory Education and am certified to teach struggling and dyslexic readers using the Orton-Gillingham approach. My husband is a retired elementary principal. We have four grown children, two son-in-laws and a baby grandson. Two of our daughters are Kindergarten teachers so we have an endless supply of teaching ideas and experiences!
